What is a BHMA® Lock Security Rating?

BHMA LOCK GRATING

BHMA (Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association) is an organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to assess the quality and performance of residential hardware, especially locks. It serves as a grading system to assist both consumers and professionals in choosing the right lock to meet their security needs. But how does the BHMA grading system actually work? In this blog, we cover all the essential information you need to know about BHMA lock security ratings.

Each BHMA Certified® lockset and deadbolt undergoes rigorous testing in three key categories: Security, Durability, and Finish. The ratings assigned to products in these categories - denoted as C (Good), B (Better), or A (Best) - serve as a testament to their performance during the stringent testing process. These ratings offer valuable insights into how well the product performed in each testing phase.

How BHMA Grading Works

How Do "Security, "Durability" and "Finish" Measure?

Security = Safety.

"Security" assesses how effectively a lock or deadbolt can withstand impacts, whether from potential intruders or extreme weather conditions.

Durability = Functionality.

"Durability" evaluates how well a lock or deadbolt functions after extended, continuous use. It also measures the lock or deadbolt's performance when subjected to excessive weight, such as a hanging purse on the door.

Finish = Withstanding the Elements.

"Finish" gauges how well your door hardware can endure a wide range of conditions throughout the product's lifespan. Severe weather events, as well as factors like sun exposure, humidity, saltwater, dew, and even the oils from our hands, can potentially damage structures and cause the finish of a lock or deadbolt to discolor or corrode.

For instance, if you come across a label on a lock or deadbolt indicating "Best" for Security, "Better" for Durability, and "Best" for Finish, it means that this product has a comparatively excellent performance in all three categories.

ABA rating

On the other hand, if you find a label indicating "Good" for Security, "Good" for Durability, and "Best" for Finish, this suggests that the product is a solid choice for finish but may have some room for improvement in security and durability.

CCA rating

Lastly, if you spot a AAA label on a lock, it signifies that the product has achieved the "Best" grade in all three categories - a testament to its exceptional performance.

AAA rating

In conclusion, the BHMA Certified® label provides you with the assurance that you're making a wise choice in your selection of door hardware. By carefully considering the Security, Durability, and Finish ratings, you can confidently pick the lock or deadbolt that perfectly aligns with your home's unique requirements.
